Paddling Maps
Onslow County has been graced with an abundance of beautiful waterways. Both freshwater and saltwater paddling are options for every level of expertise. Freshwater trails include the New River and the White Oak River. For saltwater enthusiasts, the Intracoastal Waterway runs along the eastern boundary of the county and provides entrance to the open ocean and the tributaries and marshes that surround the hundreds of barrier islands nestled near the coast. Several trails are offered around Hammocks Beach State Park and new trails are coming soon.
Freshwater Paddling Trail: Cow Horn Creek, New River
Dedicated in May 2003, the New River Kayak/Canoe Trail begins at the Cow Horn Creek in the Richlands/Steed Park. This 16.85 mile trail travels down the New River stopping at the McAllister Landing, the Burton Industrial Park Landing, and finally the New River Waterfront Park in Jacksonville. Skill Level/Difficulty: 2, 3. Trip Highlights include; salt-water marshes, estuary/sound, swamp river, black water, beaver dams, tree canopies, limestone formations, alligators, bird sightings, and wildlife sightings.

Saltwater trails are located in the Intracoastal Waterway, particularly near Hammock’s Beach State Park. Trip lengths and difficulty levels vary. Highlights include: tributaries, sounds, marshes, and bird and wildlife sightings. Enjoy routes in and around some of the coast’s many barrier islands.
