The Onslow Women’s Health Fund (OWHF) will host “Raising Green for the Girls” Bunco tournament on Tuesday, March 23, at Renee’s Courthouse Caffe, 720 Court Street, Jacksonville to raise funds for breast health screenings. The event features a Bunco tournament as well a wine tasting and silent auction.
In 2007, a group of local women – including several public health practitioners - came together to brainstorm ways to provide medical services for women who “fell between the cracks” of available health funding screenings and treatment.
“We worked with the Onslow Caring Communities Foundation and the North Carolina Community Foundation (NCCF) to establish a means to raise money to help women in Onslow County,” said Melissa St. Clair, one of the group’s organizers.
“Statistics show that each year approximately 12 women in Onslow County can’t afford additional diagnostic screening or biopsies when they find a lump or experience a related symptom. Any delay in testing or treatment could be fatal for these women, and no one should have to make those kinds of agonizing decisions.
“The Bunco tournament we hosted last March at the Onslow County Health Department was a big success, and patrons asked if we would make it an annual occasion. This event is a great way to have fun, raise money and raise awareness about the importance of women’s health,” said St. Clair.
“Raising Green for the Girls” will be on Tuesday, March 23, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m., at Renee’s Courthouse Caffe, 720 Court Street in Jacksonville.
